About

Hello! My name is James Carr.

I'm a software engineer, since 1988. I have experience across a broad range of languages and tools, but I'm strongest in .NET/C# and Python. I like scientific and technical topics, and I embrace scepticism and humanism.

Project Highlights

Until recently, I was on GitHub. I'm not particularly happy with the ongoing enshittification of that platform, especially with AI. So, I recently made the decision to move to Codeberg. I've brought a handful of my projects with me, including:

Practical Astronomy

I've spent a lot of time here.

I have an amateur interest in astronomy and several years ago I acquired a book called "Practical Astronomy With Your Calculator or Spreadsheet". The book includes implementation of astronomical algorithms in Excel. I was curious about the possibility of translating the spreadsheets into programming languages so I started playing around with that and I've now completed translations into C, C++, .NET/C#, PHP, Rust, JavaScript, Python, and Java. I've also recently begun working on a Go version.

GIS

I'm also interested in GIS topics, and I've built a few interactive maps:

Name Description
native-leaflet Historical Native American sites map, implemented in Leaflet.js
moonmap High-resolution moon image with info markers, implemented using Leaflet.js
fossil-sites-map Map of fossil hunting localities.

Other

I also publish a blog and a knowledge base.

You can see the full list of repositories here and in the Practical Astronomy organization.
